The next few months are crucial in the pageant world. As prelims and national registration ramp up, contestants across the country are deciding which systems to compete in next year. Choosing the right pageant home is one of the most important decisions you’ll make as a competitor — it affects your schedule, your finances, your opportunities, and most importantly, how you grow.
Here’s a smart, practical checklist to help you choose well and commit confidently.
1. Does the system align with your values?
Before you click “register,” ask yourself: Does this system reflect who I am and what I believe in? Pageants evolve — and sometimes a system changes after you sign up. That’s OK, and it’s a learning moment. But you’ll want full transparency before you commit. If a pageant is “next-level,” make sure you have all the details (prelim → state → national) so you know exactly what you’re signing up for if you win.
2. Read the handbook — seriously!
If there’s one single thing that will save you time, money, and stress, it’s this: read the handbook. Every rule, timeline, fee explanation, and expectation is usually included there. If directors or organizers have already answered it in the handbook, don’t ask them again. Treat the handbook like your pageant bible for the season.
3. Understand the state title responsibilities
Being a state titleholder is a job — and with that job comes duties. Read the requirements front and back. Ask yourself: Do I have the time to fulfill appearances, charity work, travel, and PR commitments? Will the time required for duties conflict with work or school? Be realistic and honest.
4. Don’t rush — take your time to decide
Don’t sign up because “so-and-so did.” Choosing a pageant system deserves thoughtful consideration. Take time to compare systems, ask questions, and sleep on your decision. A snap decision now can become a regret later.
5. Budget like a pro — know all the fees
Pageantry costs add up fast. Registration fees, wardrobe, hair & makeup, travel, coaching, and more — they all matter. Most systems publish fee schedules; find them and list everything. Create a budget spreadsheet (pro tip: I made a budgeting spreadsheet and it helped a ton!). If it’s not in your budget, don’t sign up.
6. Plan for the “If I win” scenario
Before you enter, ask: What happens if I win? Can you handle the travel expenses, time away from work or school, and additional appearances that come with the title? Do you have enough PTO or support at home? Confirm these logistics before you commit — it will save you surprises and stress down the road.
7. Remember: pageants should be FUN
Competition is serious, but pageantry should also bring joy. Make sure the system you choose has the culture and community you want. If it’s all stress and no sisterhood, it’s not the right fit.
8. Do your research — talk to people
Talk to past and present competitors. Ask current or former queens, girls who competed once, and those who return year after year. Their firsthand experience is invaluable. Also, talk directly to the directors — transparent, prompt, and clear communication from a director is a key sign of a healthy system.
9. Involve your support team — especially parents
To the Mommas and families: involve your daughter! Let her feel empowered to ask questions and help make decisions. When she’s co-piloting her pageant journey (or fully piloting it), she’ll be more invested and motivated to excel.
10. Final reminder: read the handbook (yes again)
We cannot stress this enough. Nothing frustrates a director more than answering a question that’s already been answered in the handbook. Read it, highlight it, bookmark it.
